Why fly the confederate flag?
submitted 3 years ago by lord_quas from (self.AskSaidIt)
I'm asking a serious question here. For those who fly it or support it's usage, what do southern values represent that simply flying the American flag won't? I'm not from America, and I have very rudimentary knowledge about the south.

Yeah it bothers me quite a bit when people talk shit about poor white southerners. I think the fact that it's an acceptable thing to do is what irks me the most.

Usually people who get off on irritating and confusing others. Rarely are they flying it because they have some sort of coherent ideology behind it, in my experience. 95% of the time it's purely a "suck it libs!" attitude, which is a destructive attitude by which to live one's life, purely to spite others out of hurt

Well, it was just a question. I was hoping to get responses that would explain to me what southern culture is, and if it is notably distinct from the rest of the country.

For a musical reference, try "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" by The Band. It's a good start to understanding the pride the south had as a unique culture. Over the 50 years since that song, the unique identity in the south has been largely demographically diluted, but there are still pockets.
