I find race quite arbitrary, what does the amount of pigment in a person's skin have to do with their value as a person?

I wish with all of my heart that this was the case but race goes deeper than melanin.

Exactly we are discussing jews which are mostly white to which Edvin brings up skin color.... Amidst claims that antijew comments here are because of racists, which is a non sequitur because Jews are not a race.

Eh, it's not a religion. It's an ethnicity. One that is detectable on DNA tests.

To me it doesn't, I view it as nothing more than pigment that influences how the sun affects you.

it's your dna as well and that effects IQ and personality

I'm speaking quite generally. I know for instance that studies have shown people who are African American in North America are at a slightly higher risk of heart disease. I know there are nuances associated with dna and such but I think it's more complicated than just DNA as a blanket answer. Well it is a factor there are other things to consider, like how poor neighborhoods and ghettos tend to have lead paint which negatively impacts intelligence. Nutrition and diet affect this as well, fast foot directly affects intelligence in a negative way. This is an extremely long reply so apologies. I think it's also worth noting that IQ tests are not without there flaws. People who are using English as a second or third language and not proficient in English are obviously going to have a lower score if not tested in their native tongue. I definitely understand and appreciate that it is as simple as I made it out to be in my initial comment but I wasn't particularly interested in writing a 60 page report haha.

if not using english as the main language, they are an immigrant right, well that is an issue in USA where I say if USA is so bad, head on back. Lead paint was definitely a problem where little kids would eat it. But I don't think it explains the main difference in IQ. I think IQ tests are fine. The main point is race is way more than pigment.

You don't need to eat lead paint to be affected by it. Just by constantly touching it you can absorb it through your skin, it can be from leaded gasoline, it can be from contaminated water like flint. Lead was also just one example. What about income disparity between different classes of people, how can it just be race if one person is able to have a higher quality of education, and more opportunities presented to them. Preference of choosing between prestigious post secondary education and not even having the option because you and your family could never afford. Societal pressures and stigmas also can affect that. While not an example of race women in the past have published books under male names because of stigma. Not an exact comparable but just an example of social stigma. Education can also be more difficult because of being in a troubled family or in a rough part of town. I think assigning all this value to race is a huge over simplification of the incredible amount of nuances and intricacies that surrounds human intelligence. Especially when IQ isn't even a proper evaluation of full intelligence in my opinion. Does it account for someone's ability to be a mechanic? What about welding or carpentry? A farmer might score way less than a university professor of say English on a IQ test but certainly the farmer knows way more about crops and livestock than the English academic. Every human is a unique individual with strengths and weaknesses that are not predetermined by ethnicity.

Genetics predetermine most everything, much more than environment.

Then you would fall on the nature side of the nature vs nurture debate. My beliefs more coincide with tabula rasa.

[–]HerminiaFrawkin 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Tabula rasa (/ˈtæbjələ ˈrɑːsə, -zə, ˈreɪ-/; 'blank slate') is the theory that individuals are born without built-in mental content, and, therefore all knowledge comes from experience or perception.

Nice obscure word you choose to use. There is strong evidence established to both memory before birth and memory that is genetic like instinct and then there is weak spiritual like evidence as in other life memories.

Here's a clue for you: politicians and others who have strong feelings about "social" issues, tend to believe environment as a primary influence.

Actual geneticist and scientist believe that genes are the primary influence for traits and behaviors.

Now, which of these two groups are more likely to be correct?

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

no it is mainly from kids eating it, it is sweet, so then it effects their brain development and they become criminals. Crime rates decreases as lead paint was decreased. Also led in the gas which people did inhale.

But still this happened to all people equally but it mainly effected black people because of their already low IQs. So it can't be soley to blame. If it is so bad here also head back to Africa

[–]Edvin 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

If I was American I would feel way safer and more free in Africa haha. Less easily preventable pandemic and less likely to be shot 😂

[–]Chipit 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Native Americans are better at storytelling. It's genetic.

[–]Edvin 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

You don't think having a culture that places an emphasis on verbal historical records might have an influence on that?

[–]Chipit 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I thought race didn't exist? Now you're arguing for a genetic basis for race?
