Masks were never designed to stop the viral particles, they are there to block a percentage of droplets that leave your mouth/nose which carry the viruses. Since COVID19 severity is heavily influenced by how much viral load you take in, this can mean life or death. So I don't think this-

-is a reasonable analogy because I think there is some good evidence that masks offer some degree of protection even if it isn't anywhere close to absolute. Remember, people have been wearing masks in public in countries like India and China for decades now because of low air quality and population density- this isn't a new trend that cropped up overnight.

You're post is certainly reasonable though. And it's 100% clear that China took advantage of this whole situation nefariously and I would go even further and suggest that they are subversively scare mongering more (via social media propaganda, bots, business deals, etc) to get their economy ahead further. But I also think the data clearly shows that this virus hates old people and fat fucks and while China might not give a flying fuck about their vulnerable, we in the Western world do and have to make sacrifices for our elders.
