I'm about as self-sufficient as the United States is reliant on China for drugs.

Some self-sufficiency things I've done so far (a whole lot less than I'd like, these seems pretty basic, but I thought I may as well reply):

  • small garden (hopefully will get better at this in the future)
  • learning about native plants in my area (I can now probably forage wild greens if I really have to, though it still seems safer to eat cultivated stuff since I don't know as well whether wild stuff growing around has been contaminated with animal feces or something, even if I feel pretty confident identifying one or two plants)
  • learned how to make very simple garden stuff from twigs and bamboo and other garden materials. (we're lucky to have bamboo, though I dislike that it's not native.) could learn a lot more. we have a plant we can weave and I collected fiber to weave, but I haven't learned to weave baskets or whatever yet.
  • maybe this counts: been paying more attention to sun, moon, stars, etc when I have the opportunity to during my usual activities; I don't know all of the stuff yet but it would probably help me navigate or know about time and seasons and stuff if I didn't have other options to rely on.
  • I ... uh... I own a small sewing machine but I'm not sure that counts yet. Baby steps, right? I could probably make very simple clothes if I really had to out of spare fabric. I've used a needle and thread to make very simple clothing before and do simple repairs. I was grateful I had the internet to help me with those, so maybe it would be good to download that stuff or buy a print book as part of preparedness.

Great list! I wasn't even thinking of sewing or foraging, but those are excellent additions.

Astronomy is something I need to get into as well. Everyone should learn basic astronomy
