not sure, but -

smaller userbase might lend itself less towards just casual chat

also the content on here seems to be less casual silly fun stuff and more serious politics type stuff, so asksaidit reflects that too

Fewer normies. I'd say zero, actually. I haven't spotted any in the wild.

A lot of Ask Reddit are people with stupid questions, or people who are desperate for recognition and want attention badly.

During the tail end of 2017, all the YouTubers like slazo and soothouse advertised reddit to a massive audience, and the website exploded in size immediately after. At that point, it changed from a very niche website to a social aggregation website, and most people who use reddit are exclusively on askreddit. The majority of people prefer to talk casually, as opposed to talking seriously.

Anyone who uses saidit does so due to reddit's censorship. Thus, questions about the specifics of saidit are serious in nature.

Reddit wasn't exactly a niche website before the end of 2017. It'd been popular for quite a while.

I think Reddit's voting system, in combination with its popularity, is what selects for humor. People, and especially laymen, are much more inclined to upvote funny posts that make a big impression on them, than they are to even read insightful posts fully. That's why the top comment is always a joke, and the top subcomment of that a follow-up joke, etc. This is especially the case with popular subreddits and the front page. And the widespread abuse of the voting system also discourages discussion: people downvote you for saying something they disagree with.

So unlike others, I don't think it inherently pertains to the type of person who visits Reddit. Although that also contributes, I think any community that becomes big enough will struggle with this type of problem. Just look at 4chan. There used to be various boards where you could have in-depth discussion with intelligent people. But now the discussion is drowned out by memes or single line comments, and the intelligent people long driven away.

I don't think Saidit's alternative voting system does much to address the issue either. People are already abusing it, voting insightful on a humorous comment. It's mostly its small size that keeps it this way.

Thus far it doesn’t seem censorious. It’ll do well if it doesn’t end up becoming a dumping ground for shitposters and actual far-right nuts. That’s a serious risk for any free speech oriented site that the authoritarian leftist tendencies of platforms and media leads to this. The media in particular does this by labelling such sites as being far-right, creating a self-fulfilling prophecy when far-right nutters flock to the site that, prior to media lies, was anything but.

Meanwhile saiditors are praying that the literal whack leftist nutjobs that shit up every other forum don't take hold here.

Lots of attempts to control speech have been told to 'fuck off' so far.

there are no 'far right' nut jobs. That's just us conservative folk who have had enough of liberal bullshit and ain't afraid to speak truth

I hope Saidit doesn't become like Voat though, I will have no other place to go if that happens.
