This is quite funny because I agree with you, but am anti-marriage. NOT because I think there is anything wrong with being married or that marriage is evil or anything like that. Its just that government interference has made the institution of marriage meaningless.
Its sad to see that the people who rule also have the power to tear everyone apart.

What's interesting is that during the Middle Ages, marriages among the merchant class were simply contracts, just as you described.
