I've just realised that this even happened in pre history.

People in the neolithic and bronze age Europe very much had the capability to make life like art but chose not to for some reason. Possibly religious taboos or just mass production of cheap crap.

Almost all the skills associated with painting, pottery, sculpture were discovered and practiced to perfection 30k+ years ago. Everything has been done once, if not a million times, a long time ago so then people have to try to do something different even if it isn't as good.

For the same reason I doodle rather than create actual artwork that takes time and is difficult. There's a cost in the general sense to realistic art.

Yeah but usually for religious stuff people usually do their best unless there's some other meaning to it.
