During the council of Nicea the bishop of Smyrna, St. Nicholas, had an altercation with the heretic Arius who denied the divinity of Christ. In the heat of the moment, Nicholas slapped the heretic in the face. Many centuries later St. Nicholas would also be very famous in the west when he became the main source for the legendary character Santa Claus.
