Absinthe makes the heart grow fonder.

...and the mind zone out.

I've told this one before but what the heck: The first time I went to Cambodia I arrived strung out from flights and changes and found a sort of upmarket place for a meal. They had Absinthe Cocktail on the menu and I drank one quickly and ordered another. There was maybe one customer besides me and I dozed off. After a while one of the waiters came over and gently woke me. How long was I asleep? About two hours, sir. Where am I? By the river, sir. In Bangkok? Oh, no, Phnom Penh, sir. —— Now I have been messed up in a lot of places but that was the only time I didn't know what city and country I was in. — Maybe you know but you can buy it online. The stuff that eats your brain, wormwood, no longer eats your brain but it really has a different kind of effect from regular alcohol. Enjoy but do not drive on that stuff. Cheers.

We don't have real absinthe in North America unfortunately; the hallucinogenic compound is removed. The one you had sounds quite potent. It seems like the waiters had experience with passed out customers. Might be the perfect drink after a hard day of thankless cubicle dwelling and toiling and you need to forget who you are. Not something I'd drink regularly but I should try it at least once. Found an online retailer! From the reviews: "Does the projectile vomiting scene in The Exorcist give you the warm fuzzies? Do you want to spend hours of your evening hallucinating that a purse is a very small, judgmental dog? Do you want to damage your romantic relationships with a string of texts that sound like they were written by Van Gogh's missing ear?".

Unless you make it (or know someone who does at Burning Man).

I found some online! From the comments it seems like the real deal.

Feel free to send me a bottle or case.

I wish. The bottles are a bit expensive.

On later trips I got to know the staff there and they liked to joke around a bit. Still I often wondered if the dose was a mistake but I enjoyed it and the confusion lasted less than a minute. I will check out that link. [I'm getting out the credit card. Buy now. Thanks.]

I almost bought some but the shipping costs are as expensive as the bottle itself. :(
