In short: Syria fell, because the military and local government are completely corrupt, and decided to run after a money offer. This high level of corruption seems to be normal for the non-religious Arabic nations.
The CIA and MI5 have presented the Al Qaeda and Isis terrorists as "freedom fighters", while it is well-known that they were murdering children and more. These factions also fight each other. But they are working together with Israel and Turkey to invade Syria (for now).
The Kurds are now being attacked by Turkey.
Israel is invading Syria to take oil and strategic positions, while destroying anything left of the Syrian Army. It is a major win for Israel. And a lot of people think that they may have planned it. While Israel has been bombing Syria for many years, and recently did the explosive communicator trick, it seems more that the full collapse was unplanned.
The chaos is now greater than Algeria or Afghanistan. It is likely that the Christians in Syria will now all be murdered. And the slave markets may appear soon.

95% of the rebels aren't officially Jihadists, but instead part of a general international effort to end the Assad dynasty and Ba'athist Syria.
Why that has happened should be traced back to the Iraq war, IMO, and the reason Israel gave false information in order to start that war. Israel's involvement in Syria and other M.E. countries, to destabilize and destroy whatever they can of them began in the late 19th century when Jewish settlers began taking Palestine.
US, Israel, and Turkey have of course supported the Jihadists. But Salafi Jihadist groups were only in small pockets of Syrian territory, and not in all cases (if any), directly aligned with the 'Syrian opposition' or the 'Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria' and their allies.
All of the armed factions are ridiculously complex and I doubt the US news media will explain them properly. Indeed Scott Ritter is spreading false information, as usual.
Here is a full list of the factions. Here is a map of their general locations on 1 December.
Here is a template of all controlled areas, and notes on how to use it in order to see shifts in activity.
Many factions and the major countries involved will continue their meddling in Syria's governance, which will continue their roles in destabilizing the region. Israel has also taken territory that it will likely keep. Turkey will continue their genocide of Kurds.

Corrupt filth running both sides of the conflict, both armed by the US government, and the little people end up being slaughtered. Tale as old as time.
