I think China wants the war. They're kicking out the spies, apologies for the CNN link And they want Taiwan, which makes 90% of the world's semiconductors. That's not something we can just accept, a Chinese Taiwan, at least until we ramp up domestic production. Everything needs semiconductors these days, and especially the US war machine.

China knows this and they're saber rattling anyways.

The US State Department has a one China Policy and does not recognize Taiwanese independence. Kicking out some spies means they want a war? I don't think so. And even if that was what they were pushing for, war is a terrible thing that should be avoided if at all possible.

I agree that we need domestic production of semiconductors, but starting a war over a small island across the world is not a sane option. China is not a world empire, and they're not saber rattling.

Kicking out the spies is what you do before war. I know, it's not exactly a neon sign declaration of war. But there's a lot of little things like this that together are concerning. China's military buildup, their sudden defensiveness about IP, the ongoing territorial claims, their inroads into Afghanistan, Brazil(?) or just South America in general, Africa, their roving space bots, their siding with Russia over the US. Just off the top of my head.

starting a war over a small island across the world is not a sane option

Say we couldn't make any more missiles without those semiconductors, then do you think starting a war would be more understandable? To risk losing offensive and defensive capabilities in the face of your enemies. And it's not just stuff like missiles, it's everything from vehicles to traffic lights to microwaves.

I think in our short sightedness and greed we became far, far too dependent on Taiwan and on there being a general global peace. They shouldn't be worth fighting a war for, but I think we need them and we can't let China have them.

If China would just chill until our factories are up and running, there is effort underway there, there would be no problem. And China has to know that, so pressing the Taiwan issue is aggressive.

I recently posted this podcast with Scott Horton and Joseph Solis-Mullen discussing some of this which you might find interesting: Joseph Solis-Mullen on the Fake China Threat

Are they still going to call it NATO? Or NATO-Asia? Makes no sense, but then again, neither does NATO. Time to end that organization imo.
