Politically speaking... there's a lot of money invested in Israel. Sunk cost fallacy multiplied over several years.

We can't adequately control the place.

We can barely fund them.

45% of them think we're crazy for allowing atheism to spread uncontested (lol).

Combined with the fact that if we cut tied and run they will instantly declare us an enemy when we desperately need allies in the region.

Whole thing is a clusterfuck years in the making. Like an abusive spouse who would take everything in the divorce, we can't leave them.
