The key to understanding My Neighbor Totoro, is the fact that in almost every scene, for the entire runtime, the children are in dire danger. You should watch it almost as one watches a horror movie. As strange as you may find this, I was more terrified of the unknown in this film than any horror movie I had ever viewed. And my first viewing of this film was on VHS, long before I had read the theory that Totoro is possibly a Death God.

In addition, the localization is very good. It is not a story you should view with subtitles. Don't fall for the snobbery of anime fans who will tell you to only watch subbed versions, there are just as many bad subs, as their are poor dialog passes. Other Anime's that feature superior localization compared to subs are: Akira (Original Streamline audio only), and FLCL.
