If you need a forum with less cloudflare interruptions I did build Matrix a while back. I'd like to build a culture similar to Saidit's on there. by [deleted] in AltTech

I like the idea of including both the user and the topic to get a diversity (maybe 'uniqueness', diversity has become such a loaded word) modifier. The decay you apply might need a little tinkering to get just right for the balance you are looking for, but conceptually it doesn't seem like a terrible idea to me. Though admittedly I can't recall seeing anything quite like this before

Is the problem over posting, or that all the posts from that user are more or less the same topic?

Just off the top of my head... My thought here is that users posts are not a problem in that sub, they are a problem because they are dominating the front page....it looks like you have a 'karma' system. So what if within each sub you treat karma normally, but on the front page you apply an additional decay on subs that have too many posts, like....

Top post from sub A: 100% of karma score applied to front page rank

2nd highest karma post from sub A: apply...90% of karma to front page rank (or whatever decay formula you think will be suitable)

...decreasing amount of true karma applied the more posts are in this sub

This would seem to ameliorate your situation somewhat without making any strict arbitrary rules (I see its kind of anarchist leaning, so I'm assuming you are looking for something not too heavy handed)

Idk how great of an idea this is, just trying to help ya brainstorm something that would help. This would at least leave the things alone inside the sub, but have an affect on the front page problem

Putting videos on a blockchain is retarded. But that's how modern scum think. Whatever is hot is used even when it makes no sense.

TubeLab - a peertube compatible app for Android devices that is really good! by BigFatRetard in AltTech

I really liked how it supports downloads, subscriptions, picture in picture, voting and comments. Pretty damn close to everything I use in the standard YouTube app. Also available on f-droid for those who have left the Google ecosystem.

The link for the software itself to run on your server is https://joinpeertube.org/

One example of a server is https://based.directory/ though you can't join that particular instance. There's plenty of individual instances you can join if you don't want to host yourself.

friendica – A Decentralized Social Network by BigFatRetard in AltTech

[–]BigFatRetard[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

After the latest batch of purges, I'm sick of letting billionaires control what I see and what I can do. This social networking software is part of the federverse, so you can host your own social network and pull data from other people's social network in return.

I went with this one because it was straightforward to install.

Everyone with an internet connection should have a server so they can control their own data. Decentralize, take the power back.

I recently bought a Network Attached Storage device from Asustech which includes nextcloud as an app, so you can just buy an inexpensive box, insert a couple hard drives, and host all your own services without even needing the Internet!

It's been experiencing a meteoric rise, but Parler is a free speech alternative to Twitter. I'll admit it's sort of one-sided at the moment because one group tends to be banned from twitter more than anyone else, but it seems like a good site with a lot of high profile people on it. by BigFatRetard in AltTech

[–]Madhur 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

It is standard for the profilers to ask for as much information as they can get away with - but ethical sites don't ask for anything more then what is absolutely necessary. Take the example of saidit. Even giving email is optional.

What's a red flag about it? I'm under the impression that it's pretty standard at this point.

That said, I'm not giving any site, new or old, the full benefit of the doubt

Add more in the comments, video sharing, social media, anything that counters or supplants the big social media platforms.

I do not know what stances they take politically. I just want sites to support open exchange and more alternatives.

That's the great problem with every alt-tech site so far. Conservatives are the most likely to get censored from mainstream sites, so they congregate on alt-tech sites. This results in every alt-tech site getting inundated with conservative content and not much else.

I think the solution is for conservatives to start using these sites not just for politics, but also for regular purposes. Topics like music, art, entertainment, education, and self-improvement wouldn't be amiss.
