This was one of my faves in high school for a while. I worked at a record store before becoming a DJ at Tunes, then on the college and university radio stations. Though I'd never seen that album cover before, I used to have hair just like that. Some friends said I looked like the dentist elf in that Christmas animation. A year or two later it freaked me out when my mom knew the lyrics. She used to jazzercize at some gym and they played it there.

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

"O Superman" is a 1981 song by performance artist and musician Laurie Anderson. Part of the larger work United States Live, the song became a surprise hit in the United Kingdom after it was championed by DJ John Peel, rising to #2 on the UK Singles Charts in 1981. Prior to the success of this song, Anderson was little known outside the art world. First released as a single, the song also appeared on her debut album Big Science (1982). The song topped the 1981 The Village Voice Pazz & Jop singles poll.

The voice then identifies itself as "the hand that takes" and informs the narrator that the "American planes" are coming. The song concludes with the stanza "When love is gone, there is always justice/ and when justice is gone, there is always force/ and when force is gone, there is always mom", with the narrator pleading to be held in her mom's "long", "electronic", and "petrochemical" arms.

As part of the larger work United States, the text addresses issues of technology and communication, quoting at various points answering machine messages and the slogan "Neither snow nor rain nor gloom of night shall stay these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds". This line is inscribed over the entrance of the James Farley Post Office in New York, and is derived from a line in Herodotus' Histories (8.98) referring to the ancient courier service of the Persian Empire. The line is also interpreted in the accompanying music video into American Sign Language by Anderson wearing white gloves, white sunglasses and a white coat.

The lines "'Cause when love is gone, there's always justice / And when justice is gone, there's always force / And when force is gone, there's always Mom" derive from the fourth sentence of Chapter 38 of the Tao Te Ching: "When Tao is lost, there is goodness. When goodness is lost, there is kindness. When kindness is lost, there is justice. When justice is lost, there is ritual. Now ritual is the husk of faith and loyalty, the beginning of confusion."

All of this is in the context of an attack by American planes and arms. In an interview with the Australian magazine Bulletin in 2003, Anderson said that the song is connected to the Iran hostage crisis which took place in 1979–1980. Anderson appeared as a guest co-host on WFMT Chicago to say the song is directly related to the crash of the military rescue helicopter outside Tehran — a disheartening incident where U.S. military technology essentially let down the government. This equipment or pilot failure, she continued, was her primary impetus for the creation of the song/performance piece. When it became an emerging hit in the UK, she was as surprised as everyone else, and the need to press more singles to meet emerging UK demand was what led to her first multi-album record deal.

You might get a kick out of this. Men Without Hats' Pop Goes The World album features the song Pop Goes The World which features a Bonhomme. That video came out around the same time as Pink Floyd's Learning To Fly. In a MwoH interview Ivan claimed that the First Nations guy who jumps off the cliff is the same guy in the Bonhomme suit.

I'd forgotten about this Malcolm McLaren & Catherine Deneuve - Paris Paris and always meant to find an elusive sensual ambient remix. It might have been this one but I don't recall now: Malcolm McLaren (Feat. Catherine Deneuve) - Paris Paris (Lingerie Noir Mix By Secret Knowledge). I actually think it was "The Emotional Curvatone" one - unfortunately not on YouTube. Or is it!!! : Secret Knowledge V Youth ‎– The Full B-Side

Story of the 1980s hit the Safety Dance with Ivan Doroschuk | Premium | Professor of Rock (12:11) ~ Professor of Rock, Sep 10, 2020

" 'The Safety Dance' is a song by Canadian new wave/synth-pop band Men Without Hats, released in Canada in 1982 as the second single from Rhythm of Youth. The song was written by lead singer Ivan Doroschuk after he had been kicked out of a club for [punk] pogo dancing. "

In c.2000-2001 when I art directed his "soulmate"/roommate Amanda Ghost's music video when he was around and DJed her album release party I'd forgotten to mention that to him.

Not a bad accomplishment for somebody who started out in a red lined neighborhood, in the inner city, in the 1980's when black men were treated a lot worse than they are now.

o forgot the egg thing 🙃, you dont have/know these egg things? maybe its a europe thing, you peel off the top of the egg and then spoon it out with the little spoon, you can also shop of the top of the egg with a knife - or use 1 of these i gues https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxs5pyNBCss ps,it does get messy if its very soft boiled, but oke when its coocked normal or hard....ps, if you do eat boiled eggs, i find out a way to coock them and save gas. You put 2 eggs in a small pan with water almost to top/cover the eggs (you might want to experiment a bit, until you find out exactly how much water you need to put in the pan- then put the pan with eggs on the fire/gas and as soon when the bubbles start to boil you put out the gas, and then let the eggs in the water for 1 hour or till its cold, then the eggs will be soft coocked and perfect and it saves you like 3 minutes of gas/electic every time...if you want your eggs to be a bit harder just put in a bit more water....i hope you like eggs ppppppfffffff 😏
