I think the same way you get people having struggle sessions over removing books like gender queer from elementary school libraries. They get triggered over the idea of censorship but most haven't actually read the book and they just automatically shut out anyone trying to explain the content because they don't want to hear it.

If I'm in a mainstream academic conference. And some guy comes out with a title of his thesis being about "shota". Most people are going to read that as some obscure Japanese art form and think nothing of it and just rubber stamp approval. Or not dig too deeply if the guy is good at keeping things academically vague enough. I'm scared of the people who do know what it is and are keen on learning more about it because they're very likely pedophiles and the social dynamics surrounding this in academic circles means they'll gang up and remove anyone who starts to point out their depravity. Likely by painting the person bringing the complaint as a pedophile themselves.

You're in a mixed group of people. You can't just say you know what "shota" is since the next question is invariably "how the fuck do you know what that is" and "there's fucked up shit online you stumble across" doesn't work for boomers who are still in the decision making processes. You stick your head up it will get cut off since the pedophiles will actively throw you under the bus for mentioning it.

And they've just got the hoards of weeb retards who internalized fighting with their parents over their unhethy obsession with Japanese cartoons into some need to defend "anime" against any and all criticism. It's like a religious cult in its zeal. And likely encouraged by the predators to conceal their activities. I recall about 15 years ago CNN did a man on the street piece on the disturbing porn available in shops in Tokyo, no normal people read it of course since they weren't interested then but the anime zealots went on the attack and harassed CNN into removing the piece. Lots of people saying it was untrue propaganda. I can say from personal experience it's not. And that wandering into random bookstores in Tokyo was not something you wanted to do. (It has however cleaned up significantly in the last ten years).

They're like ostrich buried their heads in the sand about the problem. But they are like viciously carnivorous attack ostriches that eat anyone who walks by and notices the problem as well.

There's definitely an issue with the amount of disturbing porn on the internet. Not even child porn but things that seem to be aimed at children. Think pornographic depictions of popular children's shows and the like. But you can't mention it in public without getting piled on. Most people are unaware and respond very angrily if you mention the issue, but the real concern is the people who are aware but lead the pile on.
