The one thing that causes true inflation is inflation of the money supply. Sure, you can have temporary circumstances, such as supply shocks, that cause prices to rise but there should be reversion to the mean (i.e. prices drop again when the supply shock is solved). But with inflation of the money supply, all money is devalued meaning prices must permanently rise to account for the decreased value of the currency.

We have of course had massive inflation of the money supply and, despite some pretended efforts to reign that in over the last year or so, the US is now in a position where it must continue to inflate (and accelerate that inflation). All this means inflation is here to stay for at least as far out as to the end of the decade. With inflation, workers must periodically renegotiate their pay, otherwise they fall behind. So we will see continued pay disputes like this one, sometimes escalating to strikes and work stoppages.
