A lot of people seem to think Joe Biden only championed "trans" toward the end of his presidency because he was mentally unwell. That's not true.

On August 9, 1990, a boy named Timothy Ryan McBride was born in Wilmington, Delaware. McBride first volunteered on a political campaign at the age of fourteen and went on to lead the Delaware chapter of Young Democrats by the age of seventeen. McBride would later work on Democrat Jack Markell’s 2008 campaign for governor and as Beau Biden’s (Joe Biden's oldest son, who died in 2015) “body man” (driver and aide) when he ran for attorney general in 2010. In March 2011, American University announced that McBride had been elected student government president. The student paper, The Eagle, praised him, stating, “On paper, School of Public Affairs sophomore Tim McBride looks like the stereotypical Student Government president…. But there’s more to him than meets the eye. McBride will take over the [Student Government] May 1, but says he’s not going to be ruling from an ivory tower. He doesn’t want to be the disconnected SG representative that many students envision…. McBride hopes to return to his home state to become a civil rights attorney after graduating in 2013.” The following year, McBride “came out as transgender” in an op-ed in The Eagle called “The Real Me.” In it, he claimed that he is a woman named Sarah and asked to be referred to using “she/her” pronouns. And with that, Tim became Sarah.

McBride is very close with the Biden family. As noted above, he worked on the late Beau Biden’s 2010 attorney general campaign. McBride has claimed publicly that then Vice President Biden called him when he “came out” in 2012 to tell him that Beau was proud of him. As Sarah, he interned at the White House under President Obama, also in 2012. In January 2013, McBride joined the board of directors of Equality Delaware and led the lobbying effort for Delaware to enact a law to redefine sex to include “gender identity,” successfully persuading Governor Markell and Attorney General Biden to publicly support the effort.

In a speech at the annual gala of HRC in 2015, Second Lady Jill Biden said: "And, speaking of family, change is having a family that fully respects and affirms who you are. Earlier in the program, you heard from a smart, talented, beautiful young woman from Delaware named Sarah McBride. Can we give her another round of applause? Now, Delaware isn’t a big state, so perhaps it comes as no surprise to all of you that Joe and I have known Sarah McBride and her family for many years. The McBride’s are a giving family—who are always ready to step up and help out when you’re in need. Sarah’s older brother went to high school with our daughter Ashley, and Sarah worked on our son Beau’s campaigns for Attorney General in 2006 and 2010."

By 2016, McBride was serving as the National Press Secretary at HRC and spoke at the 2016 Democratic presidential convention. He won a seat on the Delaware Senate in 2020 and visited President Biden at the White House for Pride month in 2021. He is now a sitting member of Congress.

President Biden has been saying that “transgender discrimination is the ‘civil rights issue of our time’” at least since 2012 (the same year that McBride “came out as transgender”). In January 2020, he posted: “Let’s be clear. Transgender equality is the civil rights issue of our time. There is no room for compromise when it comes to basic human rights.” He frequently trumpeted support for the Equality Act. In his 2022 State of the Union address, he said: “For our LGBTQ+ Americans, let’s finally get the bipartisan Equality Act to my desk. The onslaught of state laws targeting transgender Americans and their families is wrong. As I said last year, especially to our younger transgender Americans, I will always have your back as your President, so you can be yourself and reach your God-given potential.” Notably, he didn’t appear to have any concern for lesbian, gay, or bisexual people, despite referencing “LGBTQ+ Americans.”
