I don't think it's unreasonable, even if you're taking the "They just need help and understanding" approach, not to expose someone with a problem to temptation and opportunity. If your friend is trying to loose weight the polite thing to do is not to invite them out to an All You Can Eat place with you. If your friend is a violent drunk the polite thing to do is not take them on a bar hop. If your friend is attracted to kids you shouldn't be asking them to run a preschool alone.

If we're taking the generous stance that they are just people with a problem and are doing their best to cope with it and overcome it, then it's not wrong to avoid shoving their faces into it.
