Mass anti-Putin protests are supposedly taking place in Russia right now. Anyone have any insight in what's going on? by PeddaKondappa in debatealtright

[–]user97533 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this. I've seen a few longer interviews with Putin and always felt that he is a real intellectual, a real professor. Not surprising, because when he was once asked to name the foreign politicians that he most enjoyed talking to and developed a pleasant relationship with, he named those exact qualities as the ones he liked in the French politician he named as his favorite. I don't doubt he's far from perfect (I assume it would be impossible to make it to his position as a perfect person in Russia, someone else would have seized the job, so overall it's better to have someone who isn't perfect but can actually win the presidency given the environment, than someone who is perfect but has no chance of actually ever winning), but I also see him as very serious and strategic, and unlikely to do what they're claiming as brazenly as they're claiming it.

After reading the linked threads on Reddit about the massive protests and apparent poisoning attempt, I definitely felt like I was reading propaganda, intended to manipulate public sentiment. I also watched the 2-hour long palace video, without knowing much about Navalny beforehand. To put it lightly, I immediately began to feel like I couldn't trust this guy, and started to doubt the full details regarding poisoning narrative offered by Navalny - at the very least that it was ordered by Putin. I'm not alone, as the majority of the Russian population doesn't believe the full details of the narrative he offered, based on a poll I read on a site linked on here. I don't doubt it happened - when you attempt to assasinate the charachter of the richest, most powerful people in a country like Russia (he doesn't just attack Putin, but a laundry list of the most powerful in Russia) - it's not surprising that someone would attempt that. And overall it seems like the government is mostly following the law with regard to their treatment of him and his family.

That palace video felt dirty to watch, clearly a character-assassination hit job. Filled with half-truths, willing to use any detail unfairly to paint the narrative they want. What do you expect? This guy's is his political opponent. They're both going to do some dirty stuff. Then again, in fairness, if he feels that person put an attempt on his life, you'd expect that type of irrational, unfair anger. Obviously, I don't expect the average person to even be capable of putting this type of thought into the matter, much less wanting to.

With regard to the protests, I was also skeptical about them and felt that the huge Reddit threads 'supporting the Russian people in their quest for freedom' were thinly veiled propaganda - based on what I read on Unz, my feelings were mostly right. Just as I expected: relatively small crowds of useful idiot college students, degenerates, outcasts, and losers. Kind of like the summer protests over here.

I'm glad you posted this. I thought it would be nearly impossible to get some actual insight into the realities of the situation over there. But your post definitely helped.

After reading this thread I went down an Internet rabbit hole. Through pure synchronicity I came across the following paragraph in an article on mountaineering of all things.

Planet Mountain:

[Democracy] requires an educated and informed electorate which is not only absent in all Third World counties but the United States as well. The United States was conceived as a republic, but public opinion mostly believes we are a democracy. "Democracy is an ideal, it is not a product of evolution and therefore has certain dangers, which are: 1. Glorification of mediocrity. 2. Choice of base and ignorant rulers. 3. Failure to recognize the basic facts of social evolution. 4. Danger of universal suffrage in the hands of uneducated and indolent majorities. 5. Slavery to public opinion; the majority is not always right." The citizens of a nation are a product of that culture and the moral values of that society. No civilization has endured which abandoned its moral values except for the adoption of better and more fit customs. [Cont...]

Can you also clear up some stuff for me in regards to radical feminism? I made a comment to Repitilian in agreement to my experience to radical feminism--I have not had good experience with them in particular.

((I'll reply to your other insightful comment a bit later, it is getting a little late here where I live.))

Originally, I was very interested in feminism, particularly radical feminism, seeing as they are gender critical (didn't realize that gender critical is actually its own branch of feminism and not necessarily a descriptive adjective, if that makes sense?)

Anyways, I read up on many things and can agree with most topics but...

After awhile, I see many negative comments about "all men are terrible" and to not have kids because there is a potential to "raise an oppressor" and we already have "too many oppressors in the world" and how all men are nasty predators. It bums me out to read things like that considering I have a son...And originally wanted to raise him with some feminist ideals.

Also, I feel radical feminism is for people who aren't brown/minorities(which is something I am)...I've seen some rather...interesting comments to say the least. It makes me uncomfortable in general when race/ethnicity is involved. And I know that being brown/minority doesn't mean we can't be racist-we can too! I just hate the oppressive olympics games some people play instead of helping each other and looking at the real issues to fix.

Lastly, I am a GNC women, but...I do like feminine women and I don't mind if she wears makeup, high heels, etc if it makes her happy---would that make me part of the problem in the eyes of radical feminism?

Anyhow...

I guess my questions are:

  • What are radical feminists general view on men? Can men be considered radical feminists?

  • What are important issues that radical feminism tackles?

  • How do radical feminists confront libfems, anti-feminists, and others?

  • What are radfems thoughts on women who shave, wear makeup, dye hair, wear heels, etc? Is it possible for women to do those things out of liking it or is it considered patriarchal?

    • Also, once women receive complete liberation, would doing those things mentioned prior be seen as a choice the woman makes or is it still patriarchial in a sense? (sorry if I did not word question right---basically, I am curious why men get a pass on wearing makeup, heels, etc but women--not really).

If I have more questions, I will edit post or make another comment. It is getting rather late here. Once again, I really appreciate your responses, /u/GoValidateYourself. You're very level-headed.

The evils of intolerance are main plotline [sic] in the “Fantastic Beasts” trilogy.

Yes. The evils of intolerance...like smearing someone who doesn’t share your opinion as a bigot without even listening to her argument. Or, you know, trying to cancel someone’s career because she doesn’t echo your every thought. Or calling for someone’s death and/or rape because she disagrees with you.

A few reasons:

  1. It was a joke

  2. OP had just made a post about how hermaphroditism in other species proves that sex is a social construct just to post this essay about sex that has no relation to their stance on the other post, which to me indicates they’re just grasping at straws

  3. It’s a bit frustrating to have qt continue to post other people’s articles or threads they didn’t participate in and then just ask our opinion with no real input about their own thoughts on the topic. We’re here to debate each other, not people who aren’t here to back up their words. I get doing it sometimes, but it seems to be QT’s most frequent MO lately

  4. It’s a needlessly wordy and ridiculous essay that manages to say nothing meaningful or insightful despite its length

  5. Why did you have to ask me what you did? You didn’t have to. You felt like it. And I felt like laughing at this post. If you read through old posts you’ll see people laugh or joke sometimes.

  6. It’s funny to me that people try to complicate sex in such desperate ways, and after OP’s last post I found this post particularly amusing. I wouldn’t have laughed if this wasn’t coming directly after the hermaphroditism post.

The other movies are just bad movies. "Guess what", assuming that YouTube probably wasn't bothering to slightly shift the votes on one of their videos doesn't mean that someone can't recognize a bad movie.

My thought as well. To be fair it is a common religious trope. The Buddhists talk about "saving all sentient beings" while Christians are fond of "being a light unto the world." Like much religious teaching it probably has an esoteric and exoteric meaning; the esoteric pointing towards becoming one with the Godhead while the exoteric leads sometimes to compassion and kindness but often to meddling.

I am not sure how many people seriously practice the Kabbalah. I know Madonna got into it for a while. I imagine like many purported ancient practices much of the purported tradition has been invented recently. I don't know how much influence it has on Jewish culture or if the people who believe in it are regarded, like Madonna, as new-age kooks.

4am vote dumps and counting votes after the deadline violating the state constitution is also illegal.

In fact, states who allow such nullify the vote of hard working Texans, Floridians and everyone else who voted legally.

This is grounds for secession. And more states should begin to look into creating inter state treaties now.

The coasts might have big cities, but for far too long wheat, corn, beans, rice, meat and water have been exported to coastal elite states for far too cheap a price.

It's not our (right wing and dissidents) fault that we dominate un moderated and un curated spaces. There is no neutral face. Things are always sliding left or right. I'd be fine with creating an algorithm that allowed larger subs to fall out of the 'hot' zone faster. It would have to apply to all subs though. Power house left wing subs should also have to drop out quicker. This lets new users see the small and medium sized subs easier.

Gender doesn’t only refer to sex stereotypes, but also to female/male socialisation. So a person’s gender is sexual stereotypes (ex. pink and high heels for female humans/blue and short hair for males)+the way they are socialised (ex. females to be more ‘submissive’, kind and accommodating, males to be more assertive) based on the sex they are born with. That’s how I see it at least

Atwood is only four years older than Janice Raymond, author of the 1979 feminist book about males who claim to be women, The Transsexual Empire. Raymond's book was very widely reviewed - and very well received - in the mainstream press. The NY Times gave it a rave review.

Transsexualism amongst males was a very big topic in popular culture in the West in the 1960s and 70s. James Jan Morris had a huge international bestseller with his account of his "transsexualism" in 1974. Richard Raskin Renee Richards sued for the right to compete in US women's professional tennis in 1976; he won his case in 1977, and his story made international headlines. As a woman of letters and a keen observer of social trends, Atwood had to be aware of this.

In my opinion, transgender people that have undergone sex reassignment surgery aren't either sex—they would be put in the same category as infertile people, as both cannot reproduce with fertile males and females. I guess there technically is a continuum of sexes, as you're more likely to hit the infertility line with less testosterone and vice versa, but I don't think it would be as complex as this. Some things like males being taller than females have no connection to sex right now. This could be because we haven't discovered any connections yet, or it could be because there really are no connections.

Assuming—and emphasis on assuming (please clarify if I assumed incorrectly)—your central point is "trans men are men, and trans women are women", I disagree, because they haven't changed reproductive capabilities—which is what I believe primarily defines sex. The exception to this would be changing reproductive capabilities to infertility via SRS which still doesn't count as male or female in my opinion, if we are only talking about biological definitions.

Even if we looked at how other people see transgender people—actually, it's pretty likely that people will think a transgender woman is female if she looks feminine enough. This is just because most people don't want to check genitalia to confirm the sex of someone, and they'll just spit out whatever pronoun they want to use to refer to someone, since pronouns are just parts of speech, after all. I believe that everyone should try to use preferred pronouns, but there should be no stigma around constantly failing to use someone's preferred pronoun, as long as they are trying to.

I've literally never seen radical feminists say anything like that. Most radfems have issues (white and otherwise) take issue with people using the word "white" to get away with being sexist because there's a trend of it being socially acceptable in leftist/liberal circles to hate on women as long as you throw "white" in front of it. There are so many popular tweets floating around by men talking about how much they want to beat up or kill (white) women and everyone cheers like it's progressive. Contrary to popular belief, a lot of nonwhite radfems and gender critical women of color have commented on this trend. Like how it's usually done by hypocritical men and liberal feminists who have no problem being racist or abusive towards minority women that don't believe in TRA rhetoric.

I have certain critiques of radfems and their beliefs too, but making stuff up about what they believe in because you dislike them is dumb. Of all the modern feminist subgroups radical feminists tend listen to and defend lesbians the most in my experience. (At least the radfems who don't beleive in political lesbianism do. But that is a rant for another day....)

"Feminism is about EQUALITY" Equal to who? by Kai_Decadence in GenderCritical

[–]MarkTwainiac 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Women are equal to men in our worth as human beings. That's not a matter of wanting; it's a matter of fact.

But equal to does not mean the same as.

One of the aims of feminism has been to recognize that males and females are human beings of equal worth by giving girls and women rights and standing under the law that are equal to the rights and standing of boys and men. And by insuring that the two sexes have equal opportunity to participate in all areas of society.

But this does not mean treating the two sexes as if they are the exact same in every circumstance. Equality under the law and equal opportunity to participate in society means acknowledging the physical differences between males and females and making provisions that accommodate each.

For example, in school sports, boys need to be equipped with jock straps and cups to protect their genitals, whereas girls need to be equipped with sports bras and clothing and products to help manage menstruation. Giving boys sports bras and period pants, or girls jock straps and cups, would be treating the two sexes the same - but it wouldn't be treating them as human beings of equal worth or allowing them to have equal opportunity to participate in sports and society. In the scenarios I've sketched, the needs of one or the other sex would be ignored and all members of that sex would be put at a disadvantage.

In health care, adult males need to be checked and treated for such matters as prostate enlargement and cancer, erectile dysfunction, infertility caused by low sperm count and motility and insufficient seminal fluid. Females need to be checked and treated for various gynecological conditions and cancers, menstrual pain and related problems, pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, infertility caused by a number of issues specific to to females... and so on.

It's similar to providing specific accommodations for people with a wide range of very specific physical differences. People in wheelchairs need provisions that aren't needed by people who can walk - or by people who are hearing or visually impaired, either. People with hearing impairments need one set of provisions, people with sight impairments need an entirely different set of provisions, and people with mobility issues need yet another set of provisions. It's not fair to tell all people with various disabilities that they're being treated equally coz their workplace has a wheelchair ramp or their school offers sign language interpreters. Lots of people won't be accommodated and thus afforded equal opportunity by just those provisions.

Kill tracking sats with your own cubesats or shotgun shells on booster rockets, jam all frequencies, and microwave pulse anything that flies. Simple tech, and reliable if you have hardened electronics to work with. Assuming effective anti-missile tech, which isn't hard to imagine with Russian expertise and AI, the only threat once you've committed to deep war is the "air superiority" of dark satellites with kinetic payload operated by dead-man's switches, which is the ultimate MAD weapon, but the enemy has to be in the loop enough to know what kind of threat they represent.

The US Navy has made headlines for years with its incompetence. They're there for conventional threats and pirates, not to wage war on entire continents. That's what the nuclear subs and star wars programs are for.

Yes, that's true. The average straight man can't get a live-in harem of hot women, but he has access to pornography, strip clubs, e-girls, OnlyFans, prostitutes, etc.

The fact that women shame other women for daring to have boundaries and not wanting their male partners to watch porn or have bachelor parties at strip clubs is depressing. It's like many women are in competition of who could be the most servile, spineless person... and they're proud of it.

I mean the stats don’t lie. Ask them why so many trans murders aren’t marked as hate crimes. Most of them are from fellow trans.

Really? I was under the impression that most of the murders of trans people keep citing as proof of the trans "murder epidemic" are based on the information we have on Brazilian transsexuals, who are usually involved in prostitution where they're killed by johns and pimps?

By no means am I saying it's okay that trans people are being murdered. But people who go hard on uncritically shouting "sex work is work!" (a lot of whom are trans people that will never have to see that horror) tend to ignore how dangerous and deadly prostitution is.

But I also appreciate that you do stand up for yourself against detractors. You live for your own happiness. When people put you down or make you feel uncomfortable, just walking away and ignoring them is a reasonable response. Some jerks just love to duke it out, but they are easily stung by indifference. And I do agree also that this pandemic thing makes socializing way harder. I wish you all the best.

What does Gender Critical mean? by PeakingPeachEater in LGBDropTheT

[–]GoValidateYourself 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

It's not a problem, and questions are cool! I personally feel it is possible for trans-identified people to be gendercritical. In fact, Miranda Yardley and Buck Angel are aa transwoman and a transman, respectively, who acknowledge the reality of biological sex, and that sexual orientation is based on sex. I don't know if that is gendercritical so much as common sense, but we shouldn't take allies for granted, as they are being brave in speaking out. I think some people (for many different reasons) will feel more comfortable dressing/presenting as highly feminine or masculine according to society's current standards. Whether it's dysphoria, or simple nonconformity it doesn't really matter. If they acknowledge the reality of sex, the fact that it's immutable, and that it impacts women very harshly, I'd consider them a gendercritical feminist. But again, I am quite mellow.

I don't know about different levels of gendercritical, but there are different levels of radical feminism. Most are pretty chill, but some are very bitter, like the women at r/blackpillfeminism. I don't even know if they are radical feminists at all, but they are cynical as fuck, and I consider people like that to be emotional vampires, ideology irrelevant.

I am not super well-versed on the different types of feminism, but I know liberal feminism is the pretty, bow on top commodified form of feminism, that they use in marketing. It doesn't make anyone uncomfortable, and it doesn't really challenge anything. It's more about "girl power", "yaaas queen", "I'm with her", very shallow platitudes. It also is very corporate, in my opinion. All focused on upper class women breaking the glass ceiling, representation of strong women on TV (which is important, don't get me wrong), but it isn't as important as women's DV shelters, ending FGM and banning the burqa, guaranteeing abortion at all terms (even late term). The last 3 issues particularly make a lot of people extraordinarily uncomfortable, but they all represent life or death issues for vast numbers of women and girls. None of those are sexy or fun, but they are possibly the most important feminist issues today.

I can't speak really on eco and marxist feminism, b/c I don't know much about them. I think any type of feminism where people work together for women's rights (like the above 3 issues) can work together just fine, as long as they keep the bigger picture in mind, and put aside disagreements. I am fine with calling myself a gendercritical feminist.

That's okay! You don't have to call yourself or identify as anything. It's what you do, and how you treat others that matters.
