Abstract

During the past decade there has been a dramatic increase in adolescents and young adults (AYA) complaining of gender dysphoria. One influential if controversial explanation is that the increase reflects a socially contagious syndrome: Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria (ROGD). We report results from a survey of parents who contacted the website ParentsofROGDKids.com because they believed their AYA children had ROGD. Results focused on 1655 AYA children whose gender dysphoria reportedly began between ages 11 and 21 years, inclusive. These youths were disproportionately (75%) natal female. Natal males had later onset (by 1.9 years) than females, and they were much less likely to have taken steps toward social gender transition (65.7% for females versus 28.6% for males). Pre-existing mental health issues were common, and youths with these issues were more likely than those without them to have socially and medically transitioned. Parents reported that they had often felt pressured by clinicians to affirm their AYA child’s new gender and support their transition. According to the parents, AYA children’s mental health deteriorated considerably after social transition. We discuss potential biases of survey responses from this sample and conclude that there is presently no reason to believe that reports of parents who support gender transition are more accurate than those who oppose transition. To resolve controversies regarding ROGD, it is desirable that future research includes data provided by both pro- and anti-transition parents, as well as their gender dysphoric AYA children.

The whole shit is confusing because they don't stick to their defined terms and nobody knows what anyone is talking about.

I'd say gender isn't "real" it's a high level concept that is made up more or less by humans that do want to categorize things into masculine feminine or neutral categories. But that's hardly an agreed upon definition.

Whereas sex is a physically undeniable biological concept that is absolutely binary (in humans, you tell me amoebas don't have gender I'm going to ask you for a mitosis demonstration).

You want to describe the feminine "gender" as "that which is commonly associated as clothing, behaviors, mannerisms, etc associated generally with the female sex" I'd probably agree. And I'd also have no problem whatsoever with the concept of a "feminine male".

The main issue comes down to the denial of physical reality and demanding access to sex segregated spaces, which aren't segregated because of "transphobia" but because of the biological reality of sex and the fact that women can get pregnant when faced with unwanted sexual activity and men simply don't. And the reason for sexual segregation here is mainly to prevent unwanted pregnancy and to prevent women (and to a lesser extent men) from having to deal with sexual predation.

If a man wants to wear a dress and makeup whatever. If a woman wants to dress like a man whatever. People should have the freedom to express themselves as they wish. That doesn't mean they should be allowed to access sex segregated spaces.

I mean it's basically obvious she's doing it in response to legislation there. Though of course if you're going to decry their legislation you're going to have to defend why it's a good idea to allow literal children to make permanent life altering decisions regarding hormone intake, sterilization, and invasive cosmetic surgeries.

Rather than simply making them wait a few years before they are able to make those decisions.

I don't consider it to be a good idea all around to let kids make permanent decisions concerning their future especially when it concerns their reproductive potential. I'd even argue that people in their 20's are too young.

Putting the trans issue aside for a second and just focusing on the sterilization part of it. I've had plenty of conversations with young women that say "I never want to have kids" and they hate the argument of "well you might think that now but in ten or twenty years it's likely you'll change your mind. Which I get, you might not, but older people aren't talking out their ass, it's pretty normal to be a different person concerning this ten or twenty years on.

I think the generally logical approach to this is to think, right, I don't want kids now, future me might want kids, therefore, I shouldn't do anything that I can't reverse in the future if and when I change my mind.

I get that we need to allow adults a certain amount of leeway here to make their own decisions, the issues though come down to crazy people who will basically hurt themselves due to their own mental illness, and the problematic nature of amoral capitalism driven by short term profit over all else that would gladly provide surgeries with long term regret with no care beyond their own profits.

I really need to study more about the imperial Chinese eunuchs I think. There seem to be a myriad of parallels there with the current situation. You'd have men lining up to get their organs chopped off in order to pursue what was considered a lucrative career in the imperial city.

I wonder if the equivalent of the women chopping their breasts off and trying to present as men? Lack of testosterone in the ancient world would have made that difficult. Too say nothing of women's rights (or the lack thereof) preventing them from having free agency in such matters.

Regardless the older I get the more I feel like there really is nothing new under the sun. There's echoes of history in whatever new phenomenon come around and it seems like the naysayers are often correct to the disappointment of the progressive types that see a need to push forward yet are consistently frustrated by an inability to avoid the problems that have been pointed out to them before hand.
